The Audit
- What was my original “job description” for this app (e.g., “Keep up with college friends,” “Find recipe inspiration.”)
- In the last week what did I actually do on the app? Did it serve the original intent, or was it “empty calories”?
- What is the specific feeling I’m trying to solve when I pick it up? (Boredom, loneliness, professional anxiety, or just a need for a “micro-break”?)
- Does this app provide information I can’t get elsewhere?
- How do I feel 5 minutes after closing the app? (Energized or drained?)
- Does this app inspire me to do things offline?
- When I’m on the app, what am I not doing? (Reading, sleeping, being present with others?)
- If I had to type in a 20-character password every time I opened Instagram, would I still use it as much?
- If I recovered 1 hour of “scrolling time” today, what is one specific hobby or task I would give that time to?
- Do I need to delete the account? Or is there something I could do to make it safer? Examples: screen time restrictions, removing the app from my phone so it’s only accessible via a desktop browser… or something else?
- Final question: if I was to use my time on the app to connect, with someone today offline, who might I reach out to?
